The Railway Parcel Stamps of Victoria have always attracted a small band of enthusiasts, but have largely been ignored by the general population of philatelists. The reasons for this include the scarcity of material, particularly the early issues, and the lack of published information on the topic.
In this book, the entire catalogue of Railway Parcel Stamps of Victoria has been comprehensively illustrated for the first time. All denominations of all issues are represented, as well as details of printing and mintage where available. Proofs, essays, specimen stamps and known forgeries are included. Almost all the colour permutations and shades are shown.
At least 50 stamps illustrated in this book are thought to be unique. Many others are rare with only a couple of copies known. The low survival rate of key items may be attributed to the fact that these stamps were not collected contemporaneously. However, all have now been assembled here as a permanent reference.
Where records have not survived, stamps that occur in sufficient numbers have been examined. A detailed study of the cancellations has led to observations regarding the dates of issue and the periods of usage, some of which vary from the limited information previously published.
This volume deals exhaustively with all aspects of the subject and is set to become the essential resource for serious scholars of Australian railway philately as well as auction houses, stamp dealers, railway historians and anyone seeking to expand their understanding of this fascinating topic.
